Travelling the Distance

‘Travelling the Distance’, created by Glasgow-based artist Shauna McMullan, is one of the Scottish Parliament’s most popular artworks. It is made up of the words of 100 women, each writing about someone who inspired them, and is both an exploration of the histories and lives of women living in Scotland and a celebration of how women have contributed to the history and culture of Scotland.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the first UK elections in which women could vote or stand as a candidate, the Parliament are re-visiting this artwork. Throughout this year we’ll be reaching out to each of the contributors and the people who inspired them  to ask them to participate in a new digital interpretation of the work.

Were you – or do you know – one of the women who contributed to ‘Travelling the Distance’ or the people who inspired them? We’d love for you to get in touch. You can speak to Fiona McDougall, our Exhibitions Manager/Art Curator, at travellingthedistance@parliament.scot or on 0131 348 5604/6083.

Watch our video below to see Shauna speaking about the importance of the project, and for further information on how to get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you.

A list of the women and the sentences they’ve written about people who inspired them is available at Travelling the Distance – list of contributors
